LINGUAMATICS AND FAIRVIEW ANNOUNCE COLLABORATION FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE TEXT MINING OF PATENT DATA
State-of-the-art text mining, combined with comprehensive full text patent access, promises better overview of the patent landscape for more effective decision support
(17th May 2011 - Cambridge, UK) Linguamatics, a leader in enterprise text mining, today announced that it has agreed to license patent content from Fairview Research's Alexandria database. Linguamatics has acquired a developer license as part of its ongoing strategy to provide more effective patent mining solutions to its customers. Fairview Research's Alexandria database contains 85 million patent records from over 70 countries. Alexandria includes data from the U.S. Patent Office (USPTO), the European Patent Office (EPO) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Mining business critical information from patents has been a laborious and expensive task in the past. Patent data is notoriously difficult to navigate and mine due to the complexity and size of patent documents. The scalability, querying power and flexibility of I2E, Linguamatics' NLP-based enterprise text mining software, makes the process of mining for focused, context-relevant information much easier. I2E is able to extract facts and synthesize knowledge embedded within vast volumes of scientific and technically complex literature because it is able to interpret the meaning of the text using its powerful natural language processing engine combined with domain specific vocabularies or ontologies. Difficult and time-consuming tasks such as finding related information within and between patents (beyond family classification alone) can be revealed by I2E in a way that significantly increases speed to insight.
"Our customers and the wider market are continually seeking improved solutions for extracting, analyzing and synthesizing hidden knowledge from patent data, in order to provide the best decision support and gain a competitive edge," commented Phil Hastings, Senior VP of Sales and Marketing at Linguamatics. "Combining Linguamatics' innovative, market-leading text mining system, with Fairview's comprehensive patent platform, promises to be a significant step towards fulfilling those needs."
Linguamatics' I2E is already being used in-house by many pharmaceutical, biotech and related companies to mine patent data from a variety of different sources. Future plans for patent solutions from Linguamatics will provide customers with a wider range of options, including the possibility to outsource data management and maintenance via a cloud-based services model, allowing customers to focus on the core task of interrogating the data to provide the best decision support.
Fairview CEO, Mike Baycroft, said "We are very excited about Linguamatics' plans in the patent area, which provide a significant opportunity for partnership and a natural fit with Fairview's strengths in patent content delivery through the Alexandria Patent Data Warehouse. We look forward to helping Linguamatics make it easier for their customers to access relevant, high-value scientific and technical information".
ABOUT FAIRVIEW
Fairview Research, a provider of data enrichment technology and services for technical information retrieval and analysis, acquired the IFI business from Wolters Kluwer in September, 2010. In addition to Fairview's advanced indexing and standardization processes, the company maintains a comprehensive, global patent collection to complement IFI's extensive dataset of enhanced US patent information.
The phrase, 'reliable data', is used consistently by IFI's customers when describing IFI's databases, thanks to added-value enhancements like our chemical and biological indexing, our renowned US patent assignee name standardization, 'probable' assignee name additions on US published application records, calculated expiration dates, and class code updates on all patent records. To augment our patent and published application collection, IFI also offers comprehensive US patent legal status information, including ownership changes. IFI's CLAIMS® databases are hosted and available through Dialog, STN and Questel database services. IFI also offers a Custom Search Service of the IFI databases as a convenient out-sourcing solution.
